This is the correct way to remove this bruised and battered speedometer drive gear. I have a hefty investment in these two Mac tools for one measly gear removal. On a positive note this same puller assembly can be used to remove the front bearing from the input shaft. The puller has three sets of bolts to allow for differing depths making it very versatile for any bearing you may need to remove without the expense of a hydraulic press. I am not too proud to say in the old days we used a hammer to remove the speedo gear when gears were plentiful and cheap. The problem was those gears stuck sometimes, and there were few other alternatives.
